MaskOptix Review John Loftus III

My name is John Lofus III, as a Senior Project Manager, I was asked to be a beta tester for the MaskOptix Prescription Eyeglasses.

Since receiving the glasses last month, I have had a couple of opportunities to use them. When worn correctly, they work well, and I am pleased with the results. The key is to make sure the dive hat is positioned properly. Loosening the chin strap, moving the chin pad out of the way, and tucking it back in seems to work best for me. I also experimented with the glasses in my pool while wearing a frameless scuba mask, and they performed excellent once I adjusted them according to the instructions and kept a perfect seal, while remaining fog-free.

Recently, I completed a brief dive for a small bridge inspection for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) on the Licking River, adjacent to the Ohio River in Cincinnati. This dive lasted 20 minutes at a depth of 20 feet, with visibility between 0 and 2 feet. At the end of June, I made a couple of dives at the Rough River Marina in Kentucky, each lasting 60 minutes at a depth of 60 feet, where the visibility was between 0 and 7 feet.

I exclusively use LED lights, and even in these poor visibility conditions, I noticed a significant reduction in backscatter. During one of the dives, I pushed the glasses up too high on my nose, allowing me to see both above and below the lenses; the difference in visibility was very noticeable. Since most of our diving occurs in low-visibility conditions, this reduced backscatter is extremely beneficial. I love the tint!

Without correction, I cannot read gauges with my right eye. However, with the glasses or contacts, I can read them from about 8 inches away with my right eye and see them clearly at 18 inches. The reduced backscatter from the glasses also makes it easier to read my old greyscale dive computer in low visibility. MaskOptix have made a significant impact on my diving, safety, and ability to perform even in near blackout conditions.
I have used the glasses a lot over the last couple of months for both work and recreational dives. Deepest dive at this point is 120’ using a frameless mask and no issues with leaking. Also spent a couple of weeks using them in the New York harbor, Panama, and the Bahamas.
Thanks for allowing me to test these glasses!
