What Does BCG Stand For With Military Glasses?
Oct 24, 2024
Have you heard of BCG and military glasses? What do these terms mean?
BCG, which stands for Birth Control Glasses, are thick-framed, unattractive glasses issued to new soldiers to reduce their chances of connecting with the opposite sex. These glasses were issued for decades long after they were considered fashionable. The military provided these glasses as standardized eyewear for personnel who needed corrective lenses.
In 2012, the military introduced a new design known as the R-5A model. Rochester Optical, the parent company of Frame of Choice, became the exclusive manufacturer of this frame. The Department of Defense aimed to update the aesthetic, resulting in a smaller black frame equipped with spring hinges for added comfort. Made from nylon base, the frame offers a visually appealing appearance and serves as a unisex option. Additionally, the lens configuration accommodates enough space for digital progressive bifocals, reflecting advancements in modern technology.
"Are BCGs still popular? Yes, they are still loved and sought after by older veterans due to their durability. Surprisingly, these glasses have made a comeback in the fashion world. The younger generation is wearing these glasses and pairing them with modern clothing. The thick brown rims include modern lenses, leaving behind the previous magnifying glass look. The BCGs are still available at Frame of Choice and can be purchased here "
We are proud to have been supplying glasses to the military since before World War II. The military eyewear is still manufactured in Rochester, New York. In recent years, our contract with the Department of Defense to provide Optical Frames for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps has been extended. As a thank you for your service, Frame of Choice extends 20% off to those who have served.
