Best Practices for Adjusting Your Glasses at Home
Nov 11, 2024
At Frame Of Choice, we understand that finding the perfect fit for your glasses is essential for both comfort and functionality. Whether your frames feel loose, crooked, or uncomfortable on your nose, small adjustments can make a big difference. While we always recommend visiting a professional for complex adjustments, here are a few safe and effective ways to adjust your glasses at home.
1. Tightening Loose Glasses
If your glasses are too loose and tend to slide down, you can adjust the arms (temples) to create a more secure fit:
- For Metal Frames: Gently bend the arms inward if they’re too loose or outward if they’re too tight. Use light pressure to avoid breaking the frame.
- For Plastic Frames: Plastic frames require more care. Heat the temple tips by running them under warm water for 30 to 60 seconds, making the plastic more flexible. Once heated, bend the arms slightly inward or outward depending on the fit, and then let them cool before testing them.
2. Fixing Crooked Glasses
Crooked glasses can cause discomfort and affect your vision. To fix this:
- Identify which side is sitting higher or lower.
- For Metal and Plastic Frames: Gently bend the opposite temple (the arm of the side that’s sitting higher) downwards. This will level out the frame and balance the glasses on your face.
3. Adjusting Nose Pads
If your glasses are pinching or sliding down your nose, adjusting the nose pads can improve the fit:
- For Metal Frames: If the frames are sitting too high or tight on the bridge of your nose, gently bend the nose pads outward. If they’re too low or loose, bend the pads inward for a snugger fit.
- For Plastic Frames: Although most plastic frames don’t have adjustable nose pads, you can add stick-on adhesive pads to help with the fit.
4. Securing Loose Screws
Loose screws at the hinges of your glasses can cause the arms to feel wobbly. Use a small screwdriver to gently tighten them. Be careful not to overtighten, as this could damage the frame.
5. When to Seek Professional Help
While these simple fixes can improve the fit of your glasses, there are times when a professional adjustment is needed. Complex issues, such as damaged frames or significant discomfort, should always be handled by an optician to ensure your glasses are adjusted without risk of breakage.
